Why Everyone Should Learn Music

Advocates for music education frequently offer statistics on how the study of music improves test scores, grows self-discipline, and creates a sense of team spirit. Advocates like these are missing the point.

Playing music leads to the realization that we are all part of something besides ourselves. The entire artform thrives because of a collective human spirit and a language that is universal. Hours of practicing cannot be in service to oneself, but in service to all mankind.

Have a sense of humanity next time you pick up your horn. We’re about people, not numbers.
